Since July 2004, we've used an email SPAM/Anti-Virus filtering firewall
developed by Barracuda Technologies. Upon its initial installation, this reduced the amount of incoming SPAM by 90%. As we 've refined the rules for SPAM/Anti-Virus detection, it's effectiveness has risen from 90% to 95-96%.

HOW THE BARRACUDA FIREWALL WORKS

The firewall itself is a server that resides in front of the email servers. All incoming email is first directed to the firewall. Every email goes through an 8-point analysis process to determine if the email is SPAM or contains a virus.

Based on its analysis, each email is scored for its likeliness of being SPAM or containing a virus. The scoring ratio is from 0 – 10 (0 being definitely not SPAM and 10 being obviously SPAM). The categories are as follows:

SCORE	DESCRPTION
0 – 3.5	Email is fine and forwarded to destination email address
4-9	Email is possibly SPAM and placed in quarantine. Each email account receives a log every 24 hours of what was placed in their quarantine. As the user of the account,  you will have the ability to login in to the firewall and view each quarantined email. With each quarantined email you will have 2 options:        Check that the email is ok and future emails from that address should not be quarantined          (put the address on your white list).        Check that the email is NOT ok and future emails from that address should not be                           accepted or quarantined (put the address on your black list).
10	Definitely is SPAM and not forward or quarantined. They are just deleted.

ALL EMAILS LEFT IN QUARANTINE WILL BE DELETED AFTER 30 DAYS

As the user of the email account, you will be able to view what is in quarantine at anytime, but a log of everything quarantined will be sent every 24 hours.

Each domain (i.e. GSWS.com) can custom configure their rating system. For example, the threshold scoring for acceptable email can be lowered to 2 or raised to 5, depending on the client’s specific situation.

Each individual email account can customize their acceptable (white list) and unacceptable (black list) email addresses.
